Blitzword by Afterparty Games | ♟️ 2–8 Players | ⏳ ~30 Minutes

I love word games, but I have a complicated relationship with them. I love spotting connections and finding the right answer, but not everyone at the table loves coming up with words on the spot. That’s part of what caught my attention with Blitzword. Instead of asking you to come up with a word from scratch, the words are already in front of you. Your job is to figure out which one in your hand connects to the active word and rule(s) in play

The Kickstarter for Blitzword launched today, and I’ve been playing a preview copy to see how it works. Everyone starts with eight word cards, there’s an active word in the middle of the table, and a rule tells you what kind of connection you’re looking for. Maybe you need to match the first letter, share a letter, or find a word with the same number of syllables. Play a card that fits, and that becomes the new active word. The interesting part is that Blitzword gives you two very different ways to play

Strategy Mode gives you turns and two actions each turn. You can play a card, swap one from your hand, change the active word, or replace a rule. You can also jump someone's turn by shouting “Blitz!” if you have a card that follows both active rules

Speed Mode has no turns. Everyone is looking at their cards, trying to spot a connection before someone else does. When you find one, you play it, say why it works, and suddenly everyone is working from a completely different word. If nobody can find a match, you can knock on the table to call for a new rule. If everyone agrees, flip a new rule card, and keep going

How It Plays

The objective is simple: get the eight cards in your hand onto the table before everyone else. Once someone empties their hand, the round is over. After three rounds, the player with the fewest cards left over wins 🏆

Each round starts with eight word cards in your hand, an active word in the middle of the table, and rule cards that tell you what kind of connection you’re looking for. Maybe you need a Longer Word or one with the Same Last Vowel. Find a card that works, play it on top of the active word, and that becomes the new word everyone is working from

Bottom Line

Blitzword is a clever word game that comes in a small box. The idea is simple, it’s easy to teach, and the two modes give you pretty different experiences. Strategy Mode gives you a little more time to think through your options, while Speed Mode (my favorite) turns the whole thing into a race to spot the connection before someone else does

If You Like the Sound of Blitzword!

One of my favorite things about reviewing games is figuring out where they fit. Blitzword gives you two ways to play with words, so here are a few places I’d go from there:

  • If you want something more strategic: Vocabularian – build words from the cards in front of you, plan around the letters you have, and be the first to score fifty points

  • If you want more real time pressure: Anomia – flip cards, look for matching symbols, and then try to come up with a word before your brain decides to leave the building

  • If you want collaborative:

    • Just One – everyone gives a one word clue to help someone guess the answer, except duplicate clues disappear before the guessing starts

    • So Clover! – for a harder connection game. Work together to connect groups of words with a single clue, then see if everyone can figure out what you were thinking
