Board game tales and epic ramblings await!
Hola! Our love story began with a first date in the summer of 2014, a shared love of laughter, and a game called Taboo. Back then, Coty hadn't even heard of it, but Katie's vivid description of the game was enough to turn the date into a two-player tournament. It was a match made in board game heaven!
As our relationship blossomed, so did our game collection. We dusted off childhood classics with each board game becoming a trip down memory lane. Sharing games we learned on opposite sides of the world, we rediscovered old favorites and giggled over forgotten rules - even some that were made-up 🙈
After settling into our first home, we started to host our own game nights with mostly party games like Scrawl. Some of our game nights consisted of just the two of us ❤️. Rummikub became our date night tradition. We play Rummikub like our lives depend on it. Those tiles tremble when we're around.
We bought our first board game shelf in 2016 at IKEA, without knowing that Kallax units are a classic in the board game community. Most of our games were classics from childhood, college finds that included mostly party games, and a few games that we either bought or were gifted to us. At this point, we were curious about board games, but unsure where to go or how to start growing our collection. We didn't know that there were more card games than Uno and Phase 10, or that the world expanded beyond Pandemic and Catan. Our local Barnes & Noble and Hobbytown became our treasure hunts, but their limited selection eventually led us to jigsaw puzzles.
We moved to Rochester, New York before the pandemic, and everything changed! We were told to check out Millennium Games. The first time we walked in, it felt like we were visiting the Six Flags of board games (thought about saying Willy Wonka factory, but Katie and I loathe chocolate 😱). It was overwhelming! We spent so much time just looking at boxes, reading the back, and trying not to look like the wide-eyed overwhelmed newbies we were.
In the past five years, a lot has changed, yet it has also stayed the same. We still thoroughly enjoy board games, just with a lot more options than when we first started dating. We now design and print our own board game organizers to optimize set up time and satisfy our need to organize. We've even created a board game dungeon and enjoy this hobby as often as we can.
And that's where kacoplays comes in. This blog is our love letter to the hobby that brought us together. In here you'll find a space where we share the thrill of discovery, the agony of defeat, the sweet satisfaction of victory, and the continuation of our board game journey.
