7 Wonders: Architects Review

When my wife and I were brand new to board gaming, we tried the original 7 Wonders and, honestly, it was a lot. The drafting, the iconography, the neighbor scoring. We were still figuring out what half the cardboard in front of us meant. On top of that, we mostly played at two players, so it didn't exactly become a regular. Then came 7 Wonders: Architects

The idea of taking that iconic universe, simplifying the gameplay, and making it work beautifully at two players immediately caught my attention. The art is gorgeous, the game is approachable, and the inserts are honestly some of the best I've seen

🏛️ 7 Wonders: Architects | 👨‍🎨 Antoine Bauza | Published by Repos Production

👥 2–7 Players | ⏳ ~25 Mins | ⚙️ Card Drafting, Set Collection, Open Selection

COMPONENTS

The component quality is fantastic. You get seven different Wonders, each made up of five physical pieces, along with custom plastic trays for each player and its cards. The trays aren't just storage. They become part of the game and keep everything organized while you play. There are also 148 cards, 50 military tokens, 27 progress tokens, a central board, and a cat pawn. Yes, a cat pawn. Because apparently even ancient civilizations needed a little feline assistance, and I love that!

SETUP

Setup is simple. Pick your Wonder, grab its tray, place your five Wonder pieces in front of you, shuffle your deck, set up the central deck and progress tokens, and give the cat pawn to the starting player

The custom trays mean you aren't digging through the box looking for tiny pieces before you can start playing. Everything you need is already organized and ready to go

HOW IT PLAYS

On your turn, you choose one card from three options: the deck to your left, the deck to your right, or the central deck. From there, your cards help you collect resources, build your Wonder, gain military strength, earn victory points, or pursue scientific progress

Some cards also give you the cat pawn, which lets you peek at the top card of the central deck. The game takes the drafting system from 7 Wonders and strips it down to the essentials. There are still decisions to make, especially when you're watching what your neighbors are collecting, but everything moves much faster. And watching your Wonder physically grow as you play? Ridiculously satisfying

HOW TO WIN

The game ends as soon as someone completes the fifth and final stage of their Wonder. Everyone adds up their points from completed Wonder stages, blue victory point cards, progress tokens, military victories, and whoever is holding the cat pawn for two extra points

🏆 The player with the most points wins

WHO IS THIS FOR?

7 Wonders: Architects is a great choice for casual gamers, families, or anyone who likes the idea of 7 Wonders but doesn't have m ore than three extra players or wants a simplified version. It's also a great option when you want something quick and easy to teach without feeling like you're playing a children's game

PROS

🎲 Fast turns

😄 Easy teach

⚡ Zero downtime

📦 Fantastic inserts

🐈 Cat pawn, obviously

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Works with almost anyone

🗺️ Mostly language independent

CONSIDERATIONS

  • 👀 Less Drafting Tension: You don't get quite the same feeling of watching your neighbor's cards and wondering what they're going to take next

  • ⚔️ Not Our Favorite at Two: If my wife and I want a two player 7 Wonders experience, we're probably reaching for 7 Wonders Duel. If we want that head to head energy with more tension and depth, Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle earth gets the call

THE BOTTOM LINE

I like 7 Wonders: Architects. I just don't think we need to own it anymore. When we first bought it, we were newer gamers and this would have been a fantastic addition to our collection. But our tastes have changed. These days, every game has to earn its seat on the shelf. We want games we reach for repeatedly or games that bring something genuinely different to the table. Architects is a great gateway game. It's approachable, fast, beautiful, and ridiculously satisfying to play. But after sitting on our shelf, it became pretty clear that we weren't reaching for it. So this one is getting rehomed to a collection where I hope it gets played a whole lot more than it did here. Our catch and release program (our way to tabletop Marie Kondo our collection) strikes again

🎯 MORE GAMES LIKE 7 WONDERS: ARCHITECTS

🎲 Sagrada if the building and tactile puzzle are what you loved most

🧠 7 Wonders if you like Architects but want to graduate to the bigger, crunchier version

🏘️ Tiny Towns if you like building something on the table and want your brain to hurt a little

🍣 Sushi Go Party! for easy drafting, quick turns, and a game that works with almost anyone

For two players:

  • 💚 7 Wonders Duel for the same universe with more rigidity and strategy

  • ⚔️ Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle earth for that same head to head feeling but a little easier though it still has loads of tension and depth
